NEUROTOXINS

Neurotoxins: A Trusted Approach to Smoother, More Youthful Skin

Neurotoxins have transformed the landscape of cosmetic medicine, with Botox® and Jeuveau® standing out as two of the most widely trusted names in non-surgical aesthetic treatments. Botox® was the first neurotoxin to receive FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002, though its therapeutic applications date back to the late 1980s.

Originally developed to treat medical conditions such as strabismus (crossed eyes) and blepharospasm (involuntary blinking), Botox® is derived from botulinum toxin type A—a purified protein obtained from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

Since its discovery, Botox® has become the gold standard in both aesthetic and therapeutic medicine. Jeuveau®, often referred to as “Newtox,” is a more recent innovation in the neurotoxin family, receiving FDA approval in 2019 exclusively for cosmetic use. Like Botox®, it utilizes botulinum toxin type A and has shown comparable safety and efficacy in clinical studies. However, Jeuveau® was formulated with a dedicated focus on aesthetic treatment, making it a modern option for patients seeking subtle, refreshed results.

Both Botox® and Jeuveau® work by temporarily relaxing specific facial muscles that contribute to the formation of dynamic wrinkles. These products act as neuromodulators, blocking the release of acetylcholine—a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contractions. By reducing this activity, they help smooth fine lines and creases in areas such as the forehead, between the brows (glabellar lines), and around the eyes (crow’s feet). The result is smoother, younger-looking skin without the need for surgery or downtime.

During your visit, your experience begins with a comprehensive consultation. Our Master Injector will assess your facial anatomy, movement patterns, and aesthetic goals to determine the most appropriate treatment for your unique needs.

The treatment itself consists of a series of quick, precise injections into targeted muscles. The procedure typically takes just 15 to 30 minutes and involves minimal discomfort—often described as a brief pinch or pressure at the injection site. There is little to no downtime following the procedure, and most patients return to their normal activities immediately. Minor redness or swelling may occur but typically resolves within a few hours.

The benefits of Botox® and Jeuveau® extend beyond just wrinkle reduction. These treatments can also help prevent the formation of new lines by minimizing repetitive facial movements. Patients often enjoy a more refreshed and rested appearance, without the “frozen” look. Additionally, both neurotoxins are frequently used off-label for other cosmetic concerns such as jaw slimming, lip flips, gummy smile correction, and even excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Results from both Botox® and Jeuveau® generally last between three to four months. Jeuveau® may offer a slightly faster onset, with visible effects often seen within two to four days, compared to four to seven days with Botox®. With consistent treatments, many patients find that their muscles adapt over time, potentially leading to longer-lasting results with fewer units needed.

To ensure the best outcomes, it’s important to follow a few simple guidelines before and after your treatment. Prior to your appointment, avoid blood-thinning agents like aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil supplements for at least three to five days to reduce the risk of bruising. Refrain from alcohol 24 hours before treatment, and arrive with clean skin free of makeup or lotions. Always inform your provider of any medications or health conditions beforehand. After treatment, we recommend staying upright for at least four hours, avoiding strenuous activity, heat exposure, and saunas for 24 hours, and refraining from rubbing the treated areas to prevent product migration. While mild redness or tenderness may occur, these symptoms are temporary. Full results are typically visible within 5 to 14 days, depending on the product used.

While Botox® and Jeuveau® are similar in many respects, they do have subtle differences. Jeuveau® is produced using a proprietary purification method known as Hi-Pure™ technology, and it was designed specifically for cosmetic use. Botox®, on the other hand, has a broader range of both medical and aesthetic indications. Clinically, both perform equally well, and the choice often comes down to personal preference and provider recommendation.
